Import and Export of Sulfuric Acid and Sulfur in China from January to December 2023

1. Sulfuric Acid Import and Export

(1) Sulfuric acid export

According to Chinese customs statistics, China exported 2.507 million tons of sulfuric acid from January to December 2023, a decrease of 1.136 million tons, or 31.2 percent, compared with the same period last year; the average export price was 23.8 US dollars/ton, down 93.0 US dollars/ton, or 79.6 percent, compared with the same period last year.

In December, 265000 tons of sulfuric acid were exported, up 27.4 percent year-on-year and down 26.2 percent month-on-month. The average export price was 44.9 US dollars/ton, up 35.9 percent year-on-year and 9.6 percent month-on-month.

From January to December 2023, the top three countries in China's sulfuric acid exports were Indonesia (628000 tons), Chile (577000 tons) and Morocco (446000 tons), accounting for 65.8 of the total sulfuric acid exports to these three countries. According to the statistics of provinces (places where enterprises are registered), the top three provinces are Jiangsu (846000 tons), Guangxi (614000 tons) and Fujian (394000 tons).

(2) Sulfuric acid import

According to Chinese customs statistics, China imported 322000 tons of sulfuric acid from January to December 2023, an increase of 47000 tons or 17.0 percent over the same period last year. Excluding high-priced acids, the average import price was US $20.1/ton, down US $69.7/ton or 77.6 per cent from the same period last year.

Imported 11000 tons of sulfuric acid in December, up 33.5 percent year-on-year and down 19.7 percent month-on-month. Excluding high-priced acids, the average import price was $33.2/tonne, down 34.1 per cent year-on-year and 10.1 per cent month-on-month.

From January to December 2023, sulfuric acid was mainly imported from South Korea (303000 tons), Taiwan (12000 tons) and Japan (8000 tons).

2. Sulfur Imports

According to Chinese customs statistics, China imported 8.833 million tons of sulfur from January to December 2023, an increase of 1.185 million tons or 15.5 percent over the same period last year, and the average import price was 127.0 US dollars per ton, down 174.9 US dollars per ton or 57.9 percent from the same period last year.

Imports of sulfur were 624000 tons in December, up 70.4 percent year-on-year and down 16.6 percent month-on-month; the average import price was 110.3 U.S. dollars per ton, down 30.1 percent year-on-year and down 6.1 percent month-on-month.

From January to December 2023, my country's imported sulfur mainly came from North America, Japan, South Korea, and the Middle East. The top five countries were Canada (1.22 million tons), South Korea (1.139 million tons), UAE (1.087 million tons), and Saudi Arabia (811000 Tons), Japan (789000 tons), and sulfur imports from these five countries accounted for 57.1 of the total imports. According to the statistics of provinces (places where enterprises are registered), the top three provinces of import are Yunnan (2.307 million tons), Shanghai (1.331 million tons) and Jiangsu (1.123 million tons).
