Industrialization Development of Sulfur Trioxide Sulfonation Technology

After 2000, China's sulfur trioxide sulfonation equipment and related technologies ushered in a period of rapid development, and gradually formed an independent industrial form.
First of all, the development and active promotion of domestic sulfur trioxide sulfonation, so that China has a large-scale production capacity. In the middle and late 1990 s, the sulfur trioxide technology developed by the daily chemical institute was vigorously promoted in China, and the production enterprises in the washing industry adopted the domestic multi-tube membrane sulfonation device and the double membrane sulfonation reaction device with protective wind and porous distributor, while the backward fuming sulfuric acid sulfonation technology was gradually replaced. Since then, in 2004 and 2007, China Light Chemical Co., Ltd., which is controlled by China Light Daily Chemical Technology Co., Ltd., independently designed and built the first large-scale multi-tube sulfonation production plant with a production capacity of 3.8 t/h and 5 t/h respectively, which further improved the domestic sulfonation technology level and fully reached the level of large-scale production.
Secondly, a large number of foreign-funded enterprises have entered the field of sulfur trioxide sulfonation technology through sole proprietorship or joint venture, which has promoted the renewal of domestic sulfonation equipment and technological progress. Some foreign-funded enterprises such as Procter & Gamble in the United States, Kao Kao in Japan, Unilever and other enterprises have been equipped with sulfur trioxide sulfonation devices due to the need for sulfonation of their own products (washing powder, shampoo, etc.). More enterprises such as Koning (Henkel in Germany) and Nanjing Saso (Kandia) are specialized in the production of sulfonated and sulfated products through the establishment of sulfur trioxide sulfonation devices. These enterprises all use imported sulfonation equipment and technology, and the production scale is large, and they have mature production management mode and experience, so their products are of good quality and have strong competitiveness in the market. It can be said that the entry of foreign-funded enterprises and the introduction of foreign advanced technology have promoted the rapid progress of domestic sulfonation technology to a certain extent.
Thirdly, the rapid development of technology has brought about enterprises specializing in the supply of sulfonated and sulfated products. The early sulfonation device in our country was mainly set up for the production of washing powder. With the rapid development of technology, a group of enterprises specializing in the production of sulfonated products came into being. The characteristics of high quality and low cost reflected in their centralized production prompted a large number of manufacturers of washing powder to purchase from the market or commission processing instead of their own supporting production, at present, the main domestic washing product manufacturers have almost no or a small amount of sulfur trioxide sulfonation devices, and the degree of specialization within the washing industry has increased significantly.
Today, China's sulfur trioxide sulfonation technology has basically achieved large-scale, centralized, industrial development. Among the 168 sets of sulfur trioxide sulfonation devices currently in operation, the production scale of 3.8 t/h and 5.0 t/h reaches 38 sets and 13 sets respectively. Among these large-scale devices, domestic devices also account for a large proportion, with 34 sets and 6 sets of domestic sulfonation devices with 3.8 t/h and 5.0 t/h respectively. At the same time, sulfur trioxide sulfonation technology is not only limited to serve the production of sodium alkylbenzene sulfonate, but now the domestic sulfonation devices have been able to produce a variety of sulfonation and sulfation products required for washing products, such as fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether sulfate, α-alkenyl sulfonate, fatty acid methyl ester sulfonate, etc. It can be said that under the promotion of many factors, China's sulfur trioxide sulfonation technology as a whole has approached or reached the world's advanced level, and fully meets the quality requirements of the detergent industry for surfactant raw materials, which also lays an important foundation for the industrialization of anionic surfactants in China.
