Import and export of sulfuric acid and sulfur in China from January to August 2023

1. Sulfuric Acid Import and Export
(1) Sulfuric acid export
According to Chinese customs statistics, China exported 1.468 million tons of sulfuric acid from January to August 2023, a decrease of 1.414 million tons, or 49.1 percent, compared with the same period last year; the average export price was 14.7 US dollars/ton, down 116.2 US dollars/ton, or 88.8 percent, compared with the same period last year.
In August, 219000 tons of sulfuric acid were exported, down 20.2 percent year-on-year and up 1.0 percent month-on-month; the average export price was 10.9 US dollars/ton, down 91.8 percent year-on-year and up 19.4 percent month-on-month.
From January to August 2023, the top three countries in China's sulfuric acid exports were Indonesia (480000 tons), Saudi Arabia (300000 tons) and Chile (233000 tons), accounting for 69.1 of the total sulfuric acid exports to these three countries. According to the statistics of provinces (places where enterprises are registered), the top three provinces are Jiangsu (532000 tons), Guangxi (352000 tons) and Shanghai (272000 tons).
(2) Sulfuric acid import
According to Chinese customs statistics, China imported 236000 tons of sulfuric acid from January to August 2023, an increase of 39000 tons or 19.8 percent over the same period last year. Excluding high-priced acids, the average import price was US $18.1/ton, down US $97.1/ton or 84.3 per cent from the same period last year.
Imported 22000 tons of sulfuric acid in August, up 60.0 percent year-on-year and down 43.6 percent month-on-month. Excluding high-priced acids, the average import price was $17.0/tonne, down 87.8 per cent year-on-year and up 8.8 per cent month-on-month.
From January to August 2023, sulfuric acid was mainly imported from South Korea (219000 tons), Taiwan (9000 tons) and Japan (8000 tons).
2. Sulfur Imports
According to Chinese customs statistics, China imported 5.712 million tons of sulfur from January to August 2023, an increase of 275000 tons or 5.1 percent over the same period last year, and the average import price was 135.1 US dollars per ton, down 232.8 US dollars per ton or 63.3 percent from the same period last year.
In August, 817000 tons of sulfur were imported, up 30.3 percent year-on-year and down 4.0 percent month-on-month; the average import price was 99.3 US dollars/ton, down 71.1 percent year-on-year and 10.5 percent month-on-month.
From January to August 2023, my country's imported sulfur mainly came from North America, Japan, South Korea, and the Middle East. The top five countries were Canada (911000 tons), South Korea (782000 tons), Japan (554000 tons), and the United Arab Emirates (549000 Tons), Qatar (533000 tons), and sulfur imports from these five countries accounted for 58.3 of the total imports. According to the statistics of provinces (places where enterprises are registered), the top three provinces of import are Yunnan (1.417 million tons), Shanghai (825000 tons) and Jiangsu (758000 tons).
